Below is a short overview of available vaccinations which includes information on the diseases they prevent and age recommendations.
- Tetanus- a vaccination given to prevent lockjaw which attacks the nervous system causing muscle spasms and even death. It is typically given during infancy along with diphtheria and pertussis. However tetanus's immunity declines over time so it is recommended a booster shot be given every ten years and after having surgery or suffering a puncture wound.
- Influenza- is a yearly vaccine given to fight against seasonal and pandemic flu which can be quite stubborn and have the potential to mutate very rapidly into different strands. The CDC recommends children, adolescents, adults, and those who are with child get vaccinated yearly. Doing so insures better protection against the most recent outbreaks. Typically, Influenza is administered as an injection but it also comes in the form of a nasal spray.
